Varnish (Protective sealer)
With varnish the surface is a sealed with coating, to keep dirt from penetrating into the surface of the wood. This layer wears away with time, depending on the traffic the floor is subjected to. Moving furniture, dirt and dust particles on shoes can scratch the varnish. Regular care (see the care instructions) can keep this kind of wear to a minimum.
Varnished hardwood flooring has a much greater resistance to wear than oil and wax finishes do, so it can increase the life of flooring by as much as 70%.
Advantages:
There are differences according to the kind of solution (solvent-based, water-based), the kind of binding agent (natural or synthetic), pigmented or transparent, as well as how it is applied or prepared (single or two component varnish).
The current options
Most of our
prefinished flooring has ultraviolet hardened, environmentally
friendly, acrylic varnish. If resanded a fresh up coat of polyurethane,
or water based polyurethane can be applied. Careful though, do
a test sample first just to be sure.
